Downtown Underground is a group of people who join together monthly. We gather at a table for a meal, worship, and a time to reflect on our lives and spirituality.

We welcome all to the table, those exploring their faith, those with questions, those in search of a spiritual place of belonging.

We sing, laugh, and have fun!

We meet the last Sunday of every month in the lower level of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul at 6:00 pm.

All are welcome.

Why Downtown Underground?

I grew up in the Episcopal Church. I love the liturgy (for the most part). I love the music (some of the time). And I love the way I feel at home (in most Episcopal Churches).

I know a lot of people in the Des Moines area who are spiritual. We've had good talks about faith, and about life, and about what we really believe. And yet for many of us there is something preventing us from fully connecting with a church community.

My ideal church would be fun. We would look forward to seeing each other. We'd have good food and good drinks and we'd be committed to social justice.

I long for a place where I don't feel judged. A place where I don't have to prove myself.

I want to be challenged and provoked and have deep discussions about faith and about God and about life and death and why things happen the way they do.

Most of all I want people to be authentic and true to themselves.

It's a selfish reason really to start a gathering, to fulfill my own hopes for church, but I have a feeling there are others who might be in the same place. There may be others in the Des Moines area that are looking for something more in their lives and a faith community of which to belong. If so, please come. We need you and the gifts you have to bring to the table.

These three are the treasures

These three are the treasures to strive for and prize:
be gentle, live simply, and have the humility
to shy from the struggle to put one's self first,
these are the pearls.

If mercy's abandoned by those who'd be brave,
economy squandered by those who'd be generous,
humility slighted by those who would lead,
this is sure death.

Be gentle and you can afford to be bold,
be frugal and so have enough to be liberal,
be humble and thus be a leader of all,
this is the way.

Through gentleness those who attack win the fight,
and those who defend have their safety in gentleness;
this gentleness rests in the children of God,
this is their sign.
